The Piltdown hoax was a hoax that occurred for over 40 years. The scientific community were outrage after learning the truth of the remains that were found. Charles Darwin a scientist that presented evidence that all living things descended from a common ancestry. Through a process of mutation, adaptation, failure and success, he claimed that all life today including man, is the result of millions of years of evolution. Charles Darwin claim that humans and apes were related but failed to have provable scientific evidence.

A fossil skull has been found by a laborer at Basrkham Manor near the village of Piltdown and then given to Charles Dawson who was an amateur archaeologist. Charles Dawson who was a lawyer was interested in fossil hunting. He went out on search for fossils. He was particular on what finds he was looking for. He wanted to find spectacular discoveries, publicizing them and trying to build up an academic credibility for his work.  In Sussex he discovered an old Pleistocene bed that he would find remains of an ape-like jawbone with human-like teeth that seemed to link to the skull that Dawson got from the laborer.

On December 18th, 1912 Sir Arthur Smith Woodward and Charles Dawson presented the “Piltdown Man.” It was nicknamed the “earliest Englishman.” The world was at awe that they had discovered the first ape-man that proved Charles Darwin theory. Finally, a connection had been found and was made world famous. In the scientific community however, questions started to arise as experts had doubts about how human-like or ape-like this skull was. The jaw was missing the place of articulation, it was broken off and the canine tooth was absent as well but later was found. This made experts weary and ask more questions but it wasn’t until 1953 that an announcement was made that the Piltdown man was a fake.

It was horrifically embarrassing because people spent their whole career looking at it and claiming it to be real. It was exposed finally from within the museum, the Natural History Museum. The jaw was not human, it was probably from an Orangutan, the teeth had been filed flat to disguise them. The fossils were boiled and then carefully stained with chemicals to give them an aged look. The canine tooth was crudely filed and colored with paint. It remains a mystery as to who really did it.

During these times scientist we’re believed to be scholars and gentlemen. No one could possibly do something like this it wasn’t even a possibility but now you know this can happen so they are alert to that possibility. I believe the human faults to be, being judgmental. Allowing your ego to interfere with your work. This to me negatively impacts the scientific process because it clouds your mind. You are no longer taking a scientific approach but rather a personal one.

The positive aspects of the scientific process that were responsible for revealing the skull to be fraud was measuring the Fluorine content in the fossil remain they were able to tell how old it was. After further testing of all the artifacts that were found were all fraud. If you remove the human factor from science, then there would be no way for new things to be discovered. Life lesson, do your research and don’t accept a fact without you fully testing all possibilities’ take other people’s evidence for truth, always ask questions and be spectacle.

  1. You have a lot of good detail and information in your synopsis, but there is a significant misconception that needs to be corrected, starting with this sentence in the first paragraph:

"Charles Darwin claim that humans and apes were related but failed to have provable scientific evidence."

That's false. By the time of Piltdown, it wasn't really an issue as to whether humans and non-human apes were related. It wasn't about "if" they were genetically related, but how humans had evolved from that common ancestor with non-human apes. So what would this discovery have taught us about "how" humans evolved?

"The world was at awe that they had discovered the first ape-man that proved Charles Darwin theory."

No. Again, that wasn't in question by this time. It was not longer and issue as to 'if' humans and non-human apes were related by 'how' humans had evolved from that common ancestor with non-human apes. So, to ask it again, what would this discovery have taught us about "how" humans evolved? Why was the size of the Piltdown cranium relative to the comparatively "primitive" nature of the Piltdown jaw? Check out Arthur Keith's pet theory on the evolution of a large human brain.

I'm having difficulty understanding how being judgmental was involved in this hoax. Why did the culprits create this hoax in the first place? We they driven by greed or ambition or pride? And why didn't the scientific community (particularly the British scientists) allow this fossil find to be accepted without the scrutiny that was required? The faults are on both sides of this hoax.

Okay on the discussion of the fluorine analysis. Who conducted this test? And was it only new technology that helped to uncover the hoax? Why were scientists still studying this find some 40 years after it was uncovered? What aspect of science does that represent?

"If you remove the human factor from science, then there would be no way for new things to be discovered."

I don't disagree, but this needed to be explained. What is it about humans that allow science to occur?

Okay on your life lesson, but this needed to be expanded.

You start off with a lot of good detail (aside from conceptual errors), but then seem to almost run out of time for the last few sections? Address all prompts fully to your reader can understand your answers completely.

  2. I appreciated your thorough summary of the hoax. It was helpful to read your summary, as sometimes, summarizing information is not always strong for me.

Do you have more information or opinions on removing human factor from science? I would love to know your thoughts and ideas.

    1. Hello kdeegan

If you remove the human factor from science, then there would be no way for new things to be discovered because the human factor in science is how theories are developed, proven and discoveries made.

It’s using the scientific method to help with developing a thesis and testing it to see if you’ve found the answer to your question. To me, human factor in science is the involvement of a person to prove what new ways and new ideas one might have that can explain for example, “how humans evolved.” As we wonder how things are and exist in this world, human factor in science is crucial to the findings and putting them in perspective for us to understand.

We all have wondered at one point in our life, where did we come from? How did we get here? Well if it weren’t for scientist, we would never know or at least have an idea as to why and how.

    3. Correct, it is the very human scientist who asks that initial question that kicks off the process of science. But it is also the scientist who creates and designs the tests of their hypothesis and draws conclusions from the results of those tests. And it is the scientist who can review two disparate sets of information and make connections that lead to new insights and questions. No computer can do that. Only those fallible humans can.
